The Revival of Local Manufacturing

Local Manufacturing

What our Country Needs, and Wants Right Now.

There’s been a shift in Australia’s manufacturing industry in recent years with the pressures of COVID-19 supply chain issues and consumer desire for higher quality, locally made and more sustainable products.

This demand is becoming easier and more affordable for local businesses to meet with the support of government initiatives, as well as the efficiency brought about by advances in technology.

Everyone is a winner.

Locals jobs, especially in regional areas, are supported not just in numbers but in the development of worthwhile skills, knowledge, innovative ideas, job security and career advancement. Local economies are strengthened, with increased social stability. Risks with international supply chains are mitigated and our production can be more environmentally sustainable through reduced carbon emissions.

Top Growth Areas

  • Advanced and Technology-Enhanced Manufacturing - AI is making it’s mark on production too!
  • Renewable Energy – rising demands for solar power and electric vehicles
  • Waste Management – a newer industry confronting
  • Food Supply – consumer desire for locally-sourced and made produce

The Challenge of Skills Shortages

Growth in local production comes with its challenges, with the need for both skilled and unskilled workers as one of the greatest demands. Even if companies can bring on enough people, an inability to retain quality staff will be a huge disruptor to their success.

Attracting and Retaining Quality Team Members in Local Manufacturing

  • Employer branding – make a clear link between the values of your workers and your organisation
  • Ensure market-competitive wages and consider performance bonuses
  • Provide career advancement opportunities: mentor programs, career pathways
  • Initiate valuable learning opportunities through training, workshops and certifications
  • Recognition and awards to celebrate performance, achievement, collaboration and milestones
  • Work-life balance: health and wellbeing programs, social engagements, flexible working conditions where possible
  • Constantly foster a culture of collaboration and value in the people who make the work happen – celebrate team success, resilience, cross-team engagements, ideas and creativity.
